Numeracy at Elckerlyc International School

At Elckerlyc, Numeracy is taught through a varied approach incorporating discussion, contextual learning and practical activities. Our priority is to develop confidence and enjoyment in mathematics in all children with all the skills and knowledge they will need to sustain them in life. We aim for our pupils to have a growing awareness of the relationships and patterns in the world around them as well as an appreciation for Maths as a tool in a variety of situations.

The Numeracy curriculum is delivered using the British Primary National Strategy framework for Maths, supported by a variety of practical resources and schemes such as Numicon and Busy Ant. The Foundation stage Curriculum is followed to ensure continuity and progression from the Foundation Stage through to the British National Curriculum.

At Elckerlyc, we recognize the fact that many children learning English at our International school are already fluent in one or more other languages. During the Numeracy lessons, there is a special focus on Mathematical vocabulary and using the correct Math terms and language. We offer support not only to children learning English for the first time but also to any students who, although quite fluent, still require continued support in order to develop the language skills necessary for educational achievement.
